Set in the heart of wine country, Shorecrest Bed & Breakfast tastefully blends the beauty of Long Island's North Fork with warm hospitality. Overlooking the Long Island Sound, owners John and Susan Barnes have created one of the most tranquil retreats imaginable. The 1897 Prairie Box style house in a garden setting reflects the enchantment of a bygone era. The American Foursquare or Prairie Box house was a post-Victorian style which shared many features with the Prairie architecture pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright. The boxy shape of the house provides roomy interiors with a touch of history.
Shorecrest offers four unique and very romantic guest rooms. Each room is individually decorated and perfectly appointed with antique furniture, air conditioning, ceiling fans and queen sized beds with down quilts to provide cozy, intimate hideaways. Upon entering the house, guests are greeted by fine antiques, original artwork and a fireplace that adds a warm ambiance to the parlor. Adjoining the parlor is the library where guests can curl up with a good book or enjoy a cup of tea or various cold beverages, graciously supplied by the innkeepers. Adjacent to the library is an enclosed sun porch perfect for quiet solitude or for meeting and interacting with new and old friends alike.
In true bed and breakfast tradition, a full gourmet breakfast is served by candlelight in the formal dining room. The table is adorned with fine china and silver with a lovely centerpiece of flowers. Fresh ground coffee, specialty teas, fruit juices, fresh fruit and a main entree are beautifully and artistically presented and equally as delicious. While the menu varies daily, this particular morning, John and Susan served a caramelized half grapefruit with sugar, cinnamon spice and a cherry in the middle, followed by raisin bread, sausage and a french toast dish that had been baked with slices of apple in the batter. After breakfast, the porch is a wonderful place to sip tea and read the morning paper or unwind after a full day of activities.
Away from the crowds, yet centrally located in Long Island's wine country, Shorecrest is within easy driving distance of twenty wineries. The area's unique combination of maritime climate, coupled with excellent soil quality and growing conditions provides the essential ingredients for premium wine production, especially drier wines. In addition to the wineries, the area boasts fine restaurants, golf courses and many other seaside activities. However, many guests simply choose to remain near the B&B where they can spend the day kayaking or walking along the beach that is a few hundred steps away. The tranquility of the setting is rivaled only by the gracious hospitality of John and Susan who provide the little touches that make Shorecrest so exceptional.
