Bedtime in Brussels

Just a few minutes from the petit ring of the Medieval city walls and a pleasant, 15-minute walk from central Brussels lies Karin Dhadamus’ charming bed and breakfast, the Phileas Fogg.

Karin has traveled extensively, including a year in Italy, a summer in Brazil and three years in the United States. Wanting to share some of the hospitality she herself has so often enjoyed, she first opened the doors of her 1883 townhouse as an inn in 1996. In fact, the name of the inn was inspired by the famous protagonist of Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days. Phileas Fogg, inveterate traveler, is always just a few steps ahead of his followers.

The inn combines a true slice of Brussels city life with comfortable and creatively decorated rooms. From the moment you step foot into the high-ceilinged marble entry foyer to your last breakfast of Moroccan pancakes and homemade strawberry jam, you will be delighted by Karin’s casual yet cosmopolitan hospitality. Follow her into the renovated kitchen, newly fitted with brushed stainless steel and glass shelves, and have a seat at an antique farm table graced by a tangerine-colored Thai silk runner. While you enjoy a pot of freshly brewed tea—chamomile and white licorice among the flavor options—Karin will provide you with maps, directions, restaurant suggestions and a list of possible things to see and do in Brussels.

Come back from a busy day of sight seeing to one of the inn’s three spacious and comfortably appointed rooms. All three have private showers and sinks (the “water closet” or toilet is just down the hall). The homey rooms feature a mix of casual modern pieces, vintage hardwood furniture and true antiques, the two rooms upstairs even have beautiful wide plank wood floors. Karin tries to make her guests as comfortable as possible and along with excellent lighting and soft feather blankets and pillows (hypoallergenic available upon request), you might find books about the city’s history or colorful food and decorating magazines.

Even more than the antique house, the delicious breakfasts and comfortable rooms, you’ll be charmed by the warmth of Karin and her family. Her partner Stephane may share a little bit about Brussels history with you, while Nerjis, her five-month old daughter, quietly and happily chews on her own clothing. Even the two dogs, Cheops and Nefer, will greet you with an inquisitive and friendly look—especially if you have food with you. By the time I ended my journey Karin felt like an old friend, and I hope it’s not long before I can get back to the Phileas Fogg.       —E.F.
